DLA: (Do Now) Word of the Day: Shiloh (n.) – a Hebrew word meaning “place of peace” Journal: The Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6, 1862. It occurred near a church called Shiloh. III. Background for Understanding: -Civil War drummer boys went with troops into battle, pacing their drumbeats to the speed of attack. They did not carry weapons. -The boy in this story is 14 (at least one real-life drummer boy was 13). -The job involved great risk, but no combat. -Drummer boys were usually orphans or runaways. IV. Vocabulary: bene- -This word part means “well” or “good” Word Box: benediction; riveted; compounded; resolute

Literary Focus: -Historical Setting – to see places and events from history through the eyes of fictional characters. -Theme – the main idea of the text *To understand the THEME or CENTRAL IDEA of a text, you must understand the ideas and information that the author presents, and how they are connected. When finding a theme, a reader must ask: 1. “What does the author want me to know?” 2. “What lessons do the character(s) learn by the end of the story?” 3. “What does the story show me?”
