Preliminaries Pre-class List and define the 3 components of QNTs. In your journals, write at list at least 3 things you do in order to practice good reading. 3 classwork pts.

Objectives: The students will be able to identify their own reading speed. Students will be able to identify two ways to view stories: biographical and historical. Students will be able to evaluate which strategy works best for either text.

Focus Lesson: Reading Rates Demonstration: one volunteer will time the teacher for 1 minute. Teacher will proceed to read silently. At the end of the minute, the teacher will record the reading rate. Practice: do the same in pairs. One student will read while the other keeps time. After two attempts, reverse roles and repeat.

Focus Lesson: Taking Notes Read the bullet points on Elements p. 942 while the class takes notes. With a partner, have students turn to Elements, p. 944 and discuss their answers to “Reading Up Close.” Share answers with class. “Tips for Staying Focused” on that page, tip number two is what they do when students take QNTs.

Homework Write at least 1 5-sentence paragraph or 5 bullets on what you learned about reading and note taking. Due 9/13 for 10 homework points.
