.. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 1. I took Distance Learning because: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wanted to find out more about psychology and it was not offered until now. I wanted to learn Latin and this was the only way I could take the course. My school didn't offer an AP Economics class unless it was DL with another school hosting. I wanted to take AP Government and Distance Learning was the only option. I needed this Art History II to complete my art sequence. It provided a new way to learn and I wanted an Advanced Placement course that wasn't basic science or math. I took civil war in Distance Learning and liked it so I took another class. I thought it would be a good opportunity to meet new students. I wanted to take a course that was different from the ordinary English class. Section C

.. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments Section C Students most frequently said they took Distance Learning because: They wanted that particular subject. The subject they wanted was only offered in DL. They needed that course. They were interested in the technology. They wanted AP or college credit. They were interested in meeting new students. They wanted to try something different.

.. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 2. What did you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I enjoyed meeting new students from other schools. It was a good experience with a well qualified teacher. Being able to communicate with people from another school and interact with them as in debates etc. …the interaction between the different schools … who, like myself, have an interest in delving into the subject. …the technology is interesting, as well as the variety of courses. I liked that I was in a class filled with intellectuals and we got to watch television to learn. The opportunities and class choices. I could take a class not regularly offered at my school. The lectures on history. The challenge of a difficult course. I liked the teacher of my class and group work more common in DL room….different way of learning. Section C

The interesting and comfortable learning environment. The opportunity to take a class not otherwise offered. The subject or course material. The opportunity to try something different. The teacher or teaching assistant.

.. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 3. What didn’t you like about Distance Learning? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I don't like when it is difficult to hear the other sites. Sometimes there was a large echo that got to be very annoying. The other schools were also hard to control sometimes with the main teacher being with our school the most. It is hard to concentrate with other schools turned on. Some students are loud and there aren't any teachers to enforce the rules. [at the remote site] Some of the problems that occurred with students from the schools and talking in front of the class. The bells were off - our school came on 10 minutes earlier and left 10 minutes earlier. How the system automatically shut down at a certain time. Sometimes lessons and conversions would get cut off. Section C

.. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently noted as disliked by DL students: Not dealing effectively with bell schedule or school calendar differences. Not effectively planning to end the class before the DL session times out. Technical problems with audio or poor student/microphone positioning. Lack of interaction with or lack of attention from teacher or other students. Disruptive students or lack of discipline.

.. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments 4. What changes would you suggest for the Distance Learning classes? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Section C Make sure everything works, classes would start at the same time here and in other schools and make it somehow easier for the teacher to help us Better sound and camera angles. [student positioning] The echoing was a huge distraction. Also, the bells rang at completely different times. It would have been nice if there was some way to coordinate the beginning and ending of the class so that ours was not shortened. Teachers need to interact with the students in other districts. Give the same amount of attention to both schools. Possibly more assignments or other ways to learn than simply reading the text book. A stronger presence in the classes without a teacher to help preserve order. More discipline, more outside help. Coordinating school time periods and schedules. We lost a lot of time because of our different routines.
21
.. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Student Comments Most frequently suggested changes: Visits by teachers to remote classes and or combined class field trips. Better discipline, particularly to loud talking and class disruptions. More effective planning to end the class before the DL session times out. Better system for materials to be efficiently transported or transmitted. Technical improvements and better student/microphone/camera positioning. More balanced attention to classes and better interaction. Deal more effectively with bell schedule and school calendar differences.

.. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ How quickly I got used to the setup. After a few weeks the class was just like a regular class. How easy it was to communicate. It surprised me how kids from different schools and areas could learn just as much from the class as we did. How good the equipment was. That it was really easy to follow along and convenient since the courses weren't offered here at our school. You could hear the other class so well. The quality of the equipment was surprisingly good. I could see myself on the TV's and we all operated as a cohesive unit. We had a ton of interaction with the other schools. People even went to proms with students from other schools. I was surprised at the amount of work that we actually got done and how well the teacher was able to evenly distribute her time among everyone. …that our schools are different and have different views. Student Comments 5. What surprised you about Distance Learning? Section C
23
.. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support That it is unexpectedly easy to become comfortable with the system. .. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ No”) Please describe what you wish your teacher could have done. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wish she would have kept the class quiet and made sure we're all together. I wish he could have given us some kind of way to reach him other than just the class period. …not just read through typed notes, more one-on-one contact, listen to us more, …zoom in. Teach! He simply showed videos the entire year. This is no exaggeration! The class was awful. He could have acknowledged us. He simple read from a book-no teaching involved. We wanted to have class discussions more. All the teacher did was dictate notes to us. Come to teach at our school every once in a while. It was impossible to ask questions about grades. I wish he had something for us to do when he wasn't here. Section C
26
.. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Section C Students most frequently wished that the teacher would: Make a greater effort to include receive site students in discussions, Pay equal attention to them and get to know them. Visit remote sites at least once and offer some extra help. Be more organized and prepared. Receive site students that feel the teacher did not make an effort to compensate

.. CRB Distance Learning Project Student Survey 2002 – 2003 School Year BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Student Comments (If you answered “ Yes”) Please describe the efforts the teacher made to compensate. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ He would visit sites to view projects, deliver books and goods throughout the year. She made sure that she talked to each school equally. He offered us his e-mail and home number because we are not able to see him after school. He communicated with both classes and treated us as equals. She took the time to e-mail our aide to make things easier and used the computer for blackboard.com,e-mail, etc. [Our teacher] made an effort to develop a student-teacher relationship with distance schools. She went to Sharon Springs and Middleburgh for conferences on stories and to meet in person…He offered after-school sessions. Tried to make sure all necessary materials were at the remote sites. My teacher tried to keep in contact with the students by posting on blackboard.com and leaving e-mail address. Section C
