Overall results for PSPS/Careers Project
2
Reminder of the Project End of last academic year – brainstormed supports available to pupils prior to leaving school Formed a questionnaire based on these supports – which ones pupil accessed and how helpful they were Careers Scotland interviewed 8 young people School version of questionnaire completed about each of the young people – only completed for 4 young people
3
Who did we interview? 8 young people 5 were in need of more choices, more chances 3 were in a positive destinations Responses from school only apply to 4 of these yp What did you predict? 3 in positive destinations – of whom, 1 was in education, 2 unemployed No prediction for 5 young people
4
In Class Support School predicted that the 4 young people would access all supports except internet resources – through PSE lessons 4 pupils remembered getting advice on internet resources. 2 pupils could not remember getting advice on how to make direct approaches to employers or applying for jobs
5
In School Support Very few young people remembered accessing anything. School thought the 4 pupils had accessed S3/S4 interest classes – one pupil remembered accessing these 4 young people remembered having planning meetings. School has record of only one of these pupils having a planning meeting. Learning support, reduced timetable, ICT support and planning meetings were rated useful (4-5) by pupils who accessed them All supports received rated 3+ except in-class support (e.g. adult support) (rated 2 by one pupil)
6
Support from Guidance Staff Correlation between what young person remembered accessing and what school thought Young people who did not access some of these supports tended to be MCMC? Positive correlation between school and young person in relation to who had a monitor for behaviour/attendance Out of 3 young people school felt they were aware they could ask for reference, 2 of these young people reported they were not aware of this School were not aware that 2 young people asked school (one MCMC, one positive destination) for a reference Other ways in which young people felt they were tended to be related to personal issues/relationships
7
College and training School could not remember if any pupils accessed college or had training 5 attended college, 2 of these were MCMC 3 did not attend, all three were MCMC College usefulness rating is variable by those who accessed it Half accessed training, half did not. 3 out of 4 of those who did not were MCMC
8
Preparing for Work 7 out of 8 accessed work experience (school reported 1 of these). 5 of the 7 who accessed it rated it 3+ 5 out of 8 accessed out of class activities/groups, three young people (all MCMC) rated it 3+
9
Other Agencies Two pupils who were MCMC accessed 7-8 agencies, one who was not MCMC accessed 6 agencies No clear pattern between young people and school responses in relation to agencies accessed 3 accessed the school counsellor, school were aware of one pupil accessing counsellor 3 accessed social work, school did not report any pupils accessing social work One was known to the EPS
10
Careers Scotland 7 young people knew how to access a careers advisor. The young person who did not is in negative destinations 6 had careers interviews and all rated them as 3+ 5 had a career plan and rated this as 3+ The same two young people attended the drop-in service and the jobs fair. Both rated it as useful (4- 5). One of these young people reported getting help to write a personal statement and get a reduction in working hours as useful, the other had help with writing a CV. Both were MCMC.
11
Early Identifiers Range of identifiers used to predict pupils who may become in need of More Choices, More Chances 3 are used across a number of authorities –Attainment –Attendance –Care Status
12
Attainment, attendance, care status School were only able to give qualitative information on attainment and attendance Three YP who were in negative destination had average attainment One YP in positive destination had ‘good’ attendance. This young person also had a high level of overall support in school. School were able to give fairly accurate information about supports this young person accessed. School reported 3 young people who were MCMC as having attendance which was ‘poor’, ‘reasonable’ and ‘good but supped’. Pupil with ‘poor’ attendance did not access any ‘in school’ supports (except a planning meeting – school reported this young person did not have a planning meeting), was not aware could ask school for a reference, did not attend college or work experience nor access a careers advisor. Of the four young people, none were LAAC
13
Which support is most helpful? MCMC Careers advice (3 young people) The junction Learning Support Positive destinations School counsellor, guidance teacher, in class supports and helping getting to school
14
Care Status Wide range – home, school (guidance, head teacher, teacher), other agencies (EP, Careers, school counsellor), friends Why? Advice, information, help, relationship, opportunities, listened, encouragement
