Eye Contact In Deaf culture not maintaining eye contact is considered rude. If you don’t maintain eye contact it can mean several things to deaf people: you are not paying attention you are day-dreaming you don’t want to participate in the conversation You are not interested in conversation *Remember your eyes are your ears.

The Signing Space The area where most signs are made in normal conversation. Signing outside the sign space is uncomfortable on you and the person watching. *Most signs are: Centered on your right or left of your middle torso.

Which Hand do I use? The hand that feels comfortable to you: most of the time it is the hand you write with. (marriage ceremony) That hand is called your: dominate hand The other hand is the :non-dominate hand DON’T SWITCH!!

Facial Expressions When people talk in a monotone you become bored. That same truth holds for signing without facial expression : IT IS BORING for me and other deaf people.

ASL is not English You must learn to think in ASL not English

Fingerspelling We talked about this yesterday Try to communicate in other ways before you fingerspell. It is not an easy task to master. It takes time and that’s fine.

Precision is Important Signing clearly is the same as speaking clearly Sloppy signing is exactly like mumbling This can lead to misunderstandings.
