America, islands in the Caribbean, Mexico and all of Central America and part of the land that makes up USA

New Spain F- Members of Catholic religious orders Helped Spain gain a foothold in Americas Spain was a Nation Spain wanted to Native Americans to the Catholic faith Established religious outposts called, M- first settlement in a area. They were used to claim land by the Spanish. They were often protected by “presidios-” Con. U consequence, however of these missions, was many of the Natives died from diseases brought from the Spaniards. Missions were identified by living Quarters.

Cortes lands in Mexico Cortes and his army imprisoned and killed the emperor, Tore down Tenochtitlan and plundered cities treasure Upon the ruins built a new city Named it After the Aztec name “for themselves” Became the capital of Cortes inspired many to explore, journey and adventure into the New Americas in search of gold, treasure and hopes of spreading their Catholic faith

ALVAREZ DE PINEDA EXPLORES TEXAS 1519 –ALONZO ( ah * LOHN * soh * AHL * vah * rays day pee * NEH * dah), became the first European to explore the Texas Coast –He mapped the coastline from Florida to Mexico –Stopped for at mouth of a river, he called Rio de las Palmas –Reported his findings to superior, Fransico, governor of Jamaica –Moved to mexico and settled and eventually died there in 1520, during a native uprising

Shipwrecked in texas Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca- –Member of large expedition sent to conquer area between Florida and Mexico –Led by conquistador- Panfilo de Expedition Ships never arrived to pick up explorers –Stranded- Narvaez and crew built 5 ships and sailed coast of Mexico –November 1528, boats were tossed around to Galveston area –Called inland-, isle of misfortune –First Europeans to enter what is now Texas

Shipwrecked in texas Karankawas –Currently living on the coast were somewhat nice to Europeans –Built fires, brought fish, roots and other food to them –Few months later- handful of the shipwreck crew died, from diseases and exposture –Diseases took a toll on the Karankawas too –Karankawas.

Shipwrecked in texas Cabeza and his companions survived by adopting the ways of the Karankawas Est –From Morocco –First known to enter Texas –Became known as a shaman –6 months later the companions would journey off passing through present-day South and West Texas and N. Mexico –15 They reach Culiacan, Mexico
