Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder Megan Riley
2
Definition Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder is characterized by excessive orderliness, perfectionism, rules, and the need for control.
3
Symptoms Devotion to work that impairs social and family activities Fixation with lists, rules, and minor details Perfectionism that interferes with finishing tasks Rigid following of ethical and moral codes Lack of generosity Showing rigidity or stubbornness Unwillingness to assign tasks to others unless they’re done exactly their way
4
Causes There is no single cause for OCPD Theories suggest the person may have had parents who were overly protective or controlling Theses traits may have developed as a way of avoiding punishment, in an effort to be “perfect” or “obedient” Genetics may also have an influence, but this isn’t proven Cultural factors may also play a role: strict societies or religions
5
Treatments Psychotherapy- the goal of this is to lessen high expectations and teach the person to value relationships and fun. Medicine- serotonin reuptake inhibitors are used in addition to psychotherapy, by helping the person be less focused on minor details and decrease rigidity Relaxation- breathing and relaxation may help reduce anxiety and the sense of urgency associated with OCPD
