3 What do you think?  How much sugar is in a 12 ounce can of soda?  How much soda do you usually drink in a week?  Which drink has the least sugar: GatoradeRed Bull Arizona tea Orange juiceYour favorite drink

4 Why is the sugar in soda a problem?  10 tsp = 40 grams of sugar  Each gram of sugar (carbohydrate) = 4 calories  So one soda = 160 calories

5 Calories are good!  You need those calories to provide the energy for all your metabolic functions. But sugar = empty calories: no other nutritional value Unless we are starving we don’t need them

6 Calories and weight gain  3500 calories = 1 pound 2 sodas per day for a year: 2 x 365 x 160 / 3500 = 33.4 pounds per year just from drinking soda!

7 What about those other drinks?  Red Bull40 g (same as soda)  Arizona Tea36 g  Orange juice29 g (but 160% of Vitamin C)  Gatorade21 g
