Character Types: Static & Dynamic Characters Please take notes on the following character types.

Dynamic Characters  A dynamic character is a major character in a work of fiction who encounters conflict and is changed by it. Dynamic characters tend to be more fully developed and described than static characters. If you think of the characters you most love in fiction, they probably seem as real to you as people you know in real life.

Dynamic Characters  Reminding word for dynamic characters What word sounds like “ dynamic? ”What word sounds like “ dynamic? ”DYNAMITE! What word will help you remember this type of character? What word will help you remember this type of character?

Ms. Furness’ reminding word: When a stick of dynamite goes off, it CHANGES the entire look or landscape! This is similar to dynamic characters. Once they CHANGE, they are never the same, just like a stick of dynamite changes the look of something forever.

Think-Pair-Share  When you think of some of the characters that we’ve met this year, who would count as a dynamic character?  Think of the stories we’ve read: Rikki-tikki-taviRikki-tikki-tavi Three Skeleton KeyThree Skeleton Key Amigo BrothersAmigo Brothers Duffy’s JacketDuffy’s Jacket

Static Characters  When people say that a character is "static," they're referring to the fact that a character doesn't change.  Static characters are minor characters in a work of fiction who do not undergo substantial change or growth in the course of a story. They usually play a supporting role to the main character, who as a rule, should be dynamic, or complex.

Ms. Furness’ reminding word: Reminding word/picture: I think of “static cling”, or what happens when a dryer sheet STICKS to your clothes when it comes out of the dryer. Similarly, static characters “stick” to who they are; they do not change. What word/picture will help YOU remember??

Think-Pair-Share Again  When you think of some of the characters that we’ve met this year, who would count as a static character?  Think of the stories we’ve read: Rikki-tikki-taviRikki-tikki-tavi Three Skeleton KeyThree Skeleton Key Amigo BrothersAmigo Brothers Duffy’s JacketDuffy’s Jacket
