9 1 st Pupils who are in the care of a Local Authority (Looked After Children). 2 nd Pupils who are on the Child Protection Register and need to attend an alternative school to avoid the abuser. 3 rd Pupils who live in the Priority Area (former catchment area) for the school. 4 th Pupils with an older sibling (brother or sister) who will be attending the same school in Years 7, 8 or 9 at the proposed time of entry. 5 th Pupils who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs. 6 th Pupils living in the area of a closed school whose parents name one of the linked schools to that area. (If there are more of these preferences than places available, we will allocate them to the pupils who live closest in a straight line.) 7 th Pupils whose parents are basing their application on religious convictions. 8 th Pupils who live nearest to the school (measured in a straight line). 10  All applications received by closing date of 19 th October considered together – not first come, first served  We will use an Equal Preference system  If the priority school is required, it must be named on the application form as one of three preferences – no automatic allocation  Change of preference after 19 th October counts as late  Read the booklet carefully before filling out application Children & Young People’s Services Key Points

11 ON-LINE APPLICATIONS  Parents can apply on-line for their child’s Secondary School  Follow the links through the Council website: www.leicester.gov.uk/education www.leicester.gov.uk/education  Each child will have a Unique Pupil Number (UID) on their letter – this is required to apply on-line  Remember to submit the application by 19 th October

12  All 3 preferences treated equally  Highest successful preference is the one offered  Better chance of being allocated one of the three preferences EQUAL PREFERENCE SYSTEM Children & Young People’s Services

13  Ensure current school has correct address before applying  Return routes for preference forms  Proof of receipt  Reminder letters Children & Young People’s Services Meeting the Closing Date

14  Working together with County Schools, Voluntary Aided Schools and Academies  St Paul’s & English Martyrs – use their own form as well  County and Voluntary Aided schools – same closing date  Applications will be forwarded by Leicester City Council to the relevant authorities Children & Young People’s Services Applications to non-City Schools

15  On-time applications –parents informed on 1 st March 2008  Late-1 applicants will be informed w/c 14 th April 2008  Late-2 applicants will be informed w/c 26 th May 2008  Over-Subscription List (OSL) is automatically & places will be allocated if spaces become available.  OSL does not discriminate between on-time or late applications  If parents refused for any of their preferences, they will be advised on how to appeal Results Children & Young People’s Services

16  Parents can appeal for each unsuccessful preference.  Local Authority statement will highlight the reasons why the application was refused and why the school is full.  On average, less than half of parents are successful.  The appeal panel’s decision is binding on all parties.
