Blue Ridge Region Makes up 2% of our state – Smallest Region Part of the Blue Ridge Mountains Sassafras Mountain – State’s Highest Mountain – 3,554 feet tall Rural Region Streams, Waterfalls, and Lakes attract visitors. – Lake Jocassee – man made lake created in the 1970s

Piedmont Region THIS IS WHERE WE LIVE! Piedmont means “Foot of the Mountains” largest region of South Carolina. NOT flat – Has a lot of hills often called The Upstate. Cities of Spartanburg and Greenville are located here. Special Feature : monadnock – isolated hill made of very hard rock. Example: Table Rock.

Sandhills Narrow band of hilly land Used to be the coast of the state – Ocean fossils can be found in this region Fall line is in this region – Area where water drops from high ground to low ground Columbia – capital of SC – is here

Inner Coastal Plain Has rolling hills Half is covered in forests Best soil in the state Center of cotton production Congaree National Park is here

Outer Coastal Plain Flat and broken up by rivers Swamps cover much of the land

Coastal Zone Tourism is the focus – Business of helping people who travel for pleasure Miles of beaches, marshes, and islands – Myrtle Beach and Charleston – 60 miles of beaches known as the Grand Strand Important Cities – Charleston - Myrtle Beach
