Translation and Interpretation
Does not require any specialized vocabulary. Requires the knowledge of: 1- current events and trends. 2-the topic the interpreter might be asked to convert. General translation or interpretation Refers to domains which require the interpreter to be well read in the domain. Knowledge (sometimes training) in a specialized field. Specialized translation or interpretation
3
Common types of specialized translation
Financial translation and interpretation Legal translation and interpretation Literary translation Medical translation and interpretation Scientific translation and interpretation Technical translation and interpretation
4
Types of Translation: Machine translation: (automatic translation-no human intervention) Machine-assisted translation: (machine translator and a human working together) Screen translation: (including subtitling and dubbing) Sight translation: (Document in the source language is explained orally in the target language) Localization: (to make the product appropriate to the target country)

Consecutive Interpreting Vs. Simultaneous interpreting
Interpreter listens to a speech. Does simultaneously while he is listening. Used when there are numerous languages needed. Should only be done into one’s A language. Events with large number of participants. The interpreter works in sound-proof booth. Interpreter takes notes while listening. Does his\her interpretation during pauses. Used when there are only two languages at work. It’s done into the interpreter’s A and B languages. (it’s a bilateral interpretation- interpreter would interpret in both directions). Events with limited number of participants. (e.g. highly technical meetings, working lunches, small groups, field trips) The interpreter sits or stands beside the source language speakers.

Example of Consecutive Interpreting

Example of Simultaneous interpreting
13
What is the nature of consecutive interpreting practice?
The main advantage: Difficulties Interpreter ethics Types of consecutive interpreting based on the length of speech Well trained interpreters A glance at its history
14
The main advantage The mobility that is the possibility of movement of the discussion group
15
Difficulties of Consecutive Interpretation
Necessity of adaptation of the source text to make the it clear for the target audience Inadmissibility to express the interpreter’s own opinion
16
Interpreter ethics The interpreter should be playing the role of a mediator (no interfering – no exaggerating – no underestimating) The interpreter would not afford rendering the speech failure of the speaker The interpreter would conceal the interlocutor’s confusion
17
Types of consecutive interpreting based on the length of speech
"short CI" the interpreter relies on memory, each message segment being brief enough to memorize "long CI" the interpreter takes notes of the message to aid rendering long passages # These informal divisions are established with the client before the interpretation is effected, depending upon the subject, its complexity, and the purpose of the interpretation
18
Well-trained interpreters: can render speeches of 10 minutes or more with great accuracy at the same time.
19
A glance at its history Consecutive interpretation was the first mode of interpretation widely used at international meetings. Some of the finest moments in consecutive interpreting occurred at the time of the Paris Peace Conference and in the meetings of the League of Nations at the end of the World War I.
20
A glance at its history The pioneers of this method were Paul Mantoux, Antoine Velleman, Jean Herbert, amongst others. By the late 1940s, simultaneous interpretation became the most used method in the meetings of the main bodies of the United Nations. Today, staff interpreters provide consecutive interpretation for meetings of Heads of State or high government officials with Secretary-General, Presidents of the Security Council etc.

Listening Activity: 1# what is the topic?
2# where does the competition take place? And when? 3# who won the first place? 4# what is the name of its robot? 5# are there any other winners? 6# what was the task of that competition?
