The Ottomans: Istanbul (Not Constantinople) During the 15 th Century, the Ottoman Turks invaded the Byzantine city of Constantinople, starting the Ottoman Empire Ottoman Sultan Selim I Rules from Constantinople, renamed Istanbul.

The Ottomans: Who??? The Ottoman Turks…. Muslim, but tolerant of other religions when they conquered territories EXCEPT…if you were recruited to the Janissaries Janissaries – elite military recruited from local Christian populations and converted to islam. They only served the Sultan.

The Ottomans: Who??? Government Structure Sultan –Hereditary, but not necessarily to the eldest son. –Supreme ruler –Harem – household of the sultan. Consisted of Sultan, wives, and children Grand Vizier –Chief minister –In charge of most of the day-to-day administration of the Empire.

The Mughals: Who?? Not Native Indians, they are Muslims from North of the Indus River Valley. Akbar the Great – 3 rd Mogul Shah in India. Expanded the Empire to its height. –His “Empire” was really a collection of semi-autonomous states –Married a Hindu Woman –Practiced Religious tolerance
