Before an event, make sure you have a simple pitch about who you are and what you do, and identify the people you would particularly like to meet. 2.Stand out from the crowd. Think of an interesting story about yourself or your work that would make someone remember you and want to know more. 3.Build relationships. Networking is not about handing over your business card and moving on. It’s about asking questions, listening and getting to know people. 4.Never waste a lunch. Always eat with someone, not alone at your desk. Arrange lunch with a colleague you have not seen for a while, or someone you don’t know very well. 5.Give something back. Networking is about sharing and helping each other. Keep your eyes and ears open for gems of intelligence and share them with people you've met who would find them interesting.

People will appreciate and remember you for it and the favour will be returned. 7.Raise your profile. Attend varied networking events, or speak at events about your area of work. 8.Smile. Don’t focus so much on the need to network that you forget to be yourself and smile; people will warm to you far faster and you’ll enjoy yourself. 9.Ask a question. Joining a group engaged in conversation can be awkward. The best way to do so is to pose a question to the group after getting the gist of the conversation. It's a much easier way to engage than by barging in with an opinion. 10.Listen. People love to talk about themselves. If you can get people to discuss their experiences and opinions - and listen with sincere interest - you can have a great conversation with someone without having to say much at all.
