BSc Nursing Pebble Pad Project

Why Change? By moving to electronic portfolios we want to: Make the portfolio secure and deal with the risks of both loss and unauthorised access Enable faster and more in-depth interaction between students, mentors and personal supervisors Give our students a platform to develop as better reflective learners Give our students a portfolio which they can take with them after graduating and use for further professional development

From Pilot Project to Now Started October 2012 Two Co-operative Learning groups This pilot involved; 39 students, 37 mentors 12 link lecturers. The e-portfolio will be rolled out over a single academic year starting from October 2013. Full implementation includes an increase in numbers to approximately; 600 students 45 link lecturers/personal supervisors 20 student support staff 2500 mentors

Approach 1. Heightened awareness Updates –HEI staff meetings, partnership groups and mentor updates Website Screenshot rolling presentations 2. Dissemination Newsletters Briefings/postcards Training manuals Camtasia videos 3. Training 950 mentors planned so far All link lecturers-planned All students- planned 4. On-going support Through link lecturers/personal supervisors Timely updates and further training

Top Tips so far! Don’t underestimate the sheer scale of such a project Partnerships are everything – trusts, colleagues, students, practice learning facilitators, commissioners Keep momentum-Pebblepad should be coming out of their ears Factor in roll out costs and resources Source sufficient IT facilities for both mentor training and using the system in practice Start with workbooks if involving mentors Practice colleagues HATE cascade training approaches Exhaust every favour you can out of your poor unsuspecting colleagues

Future? The intention is to develop the Mentor Preparation Programme portfolio as an e-portfolio as it seems logical that those who support the pre-registration students should have a similar experience. This will have also have the consequence of disseminating information about the e-portfolio and increasing mentors’ ability to engage with the system.
