Using portfolios in Teacher Education in a Skills for Life setting Friday 26 th February 2010 Cathie Lacey
2
Teach ESOL subject specialist modules (2) Teach a core PGCE module Teach a professional practice for the additional diploma Observe and support teachers at different stages in their careers What do I do?
3
How did I get into using PebblePad? Saw how a colleague used it Thought I would like to try it for myself Began, very tentatively, with a blog for a group of ESOL PGCE students in 2005/6 Saw how useful the tool could be Was supported (mentored) closely
4
What were the difficulties for me? I still felt concerned about some things – marking reflective practice journals on line (I like the pencil in my hand!) I wasnt sure what to say in a blog Unsure of tone of online conversation How would I keep track of things?
5
What were the advantages? I could go back and reread stuff from all the students It looked so neat – even for those student teachers who find keeping stuff neat (and for me, too) Can be personalised All in one place
6
So, why use an e-portfolio system? To allow review and reflection on activities completed in class To provide additional resources My own teaching webfolios: To allow access to students who arent able to attend a class To remind students of tasks and activities to do
7
So, why use an e-portfolio system? Engage in regular support and dialogue with PGCE student teachers
8
Current students webfolios Student A Student B Student C
9
v Profiles for each teacher Profiles for each student teacher To allow students to take stock of where they are in their process of becoming teachers
10
So, why use an e-portfolio system? To share a range of resources across a group, a cohort – a partnership. Our minimum core webfolio was set up to allow students across the partnerships access to a range of resources for this key part of their teacher education course
