17 Background Knowledge Some myths attempt to explain how the world works. Other myths discuss the adventures and mistakes of heroes and other interesting characters. The characters are often larger than life, with abilities so special that they are unreal. “Daedalus and Icarus” is an example of this type of myth. Daedalus was a famous architect and inventor. He built for King Minos a maze so complex that no one could escape it. To keep Daedalus from revealing the secret– he imprisoned Daedalus and his son.

18 Literary Element A myth may explain why something in nature happens or looks the way it does—for example; why there are seasons. A myth may imaginatively explain why people behave in a certain way– for example, why they believe that those who are hospitable will be rewarded Characters in myth may include gods and goddesses as well as humans.
