3 Hasty Generalization To jump to the easiest, quickest, most obvious conclusion without enough examples to support it. (Your teacher can't speak French, you can't speak French, therefore, no one in this class can speak French.)

4 Red Herring Something that’s designed to distract your attention away from the subject.

5 False Cause An incorrect or misleading comparison

6 Band Wagon The message is: "Our product is so good that everyone buys it. You should too." (If a product is very popular, does that necessarily mean it is good?) Comes from 19th century political campaign slogan "jump on the bandwagon."

7 Appeal to Fear If you don’t do certain thing, something bad will happen.

8 Prefixes To Know! Re -- again, back repeat, recede, regress (step back) Un -- (Latin: one, single) Mis --(Anglo-Saxon: bad, harsh, wrong; always a prefix) De -- down, away, descend, deject (cast down) Dis -- (Latin: apart, asunder; away, from; in different directions; utterly, completely)

9 Suffixes To Know! Able-- able (uh buhl; depending on word to which it is attached) Ous-- (Latin: full of or having the qualities of; Ment-- (Latin: a suffix; result of, means of, act of; place of action) Ness– state of Ful– full of characterized by

10 Other Terms To Know! irony: method of expression in which the ordinary meaning of a word or situation is the opposite of the thought in the speaker's mind; when the opposite of what you expect to happen occurs.

11 Other Terms To Know! pun: a humorous use of a word where it can have different meanings; a play on words with almost the same meaning.

12 Other Terms To Know! figurative language: metaphors, simile, personification used to enhance comparisons. Metaphor: a comparison between two unlike things that are alike in one way, does not use "like" or "as." Simile: a comparison between two unlike things that are alike in one way, use "like" or "as." Personification: giving human characteristics to inanimate objects or animals.
