3 ML: Close Readers use affixes & roots as clues to infer meaning of words. RI.6.1; 6.4 L.6.4b DOK.2; DOK.2

4 MODEL…Many English words have Greek and Latin roots and affixes (prefixes & suffixes). ~distribute chart RootMeaning aud“hear” cycle“circle, wheel” therm“heat” mot, mov“move” vis, vid“see” meter“measure” PrefixMeaningSuffixMeaning uni-“one”-ance, -ence“state of” bi-“two”-ion, -al“action, process” tri-“three”-or“state” or “quality of”

5 A suffix adds meaning to a root or word. Watch how I examine a word’s position & function to understanding meaning. Inez sat in the audience at a cooking show. The suffix –ence signals that this word is a noun. The root aud- means “hear”. Since aud- means “hear” and –ence means “state of”, it makes sense that the meaning of “audience” is a “thing” (a group) that listens. A suffix adds meaning to a root or word. Suffixes often give clues that indicate part of speech (noun, adjective, etc.). The suffix –ence usually signals a noun; the suffix –al usually signals an adjective.

6 Because she had great vision, this was an easy task. 6 Active Work…Let’s work together to think about the meaning of the red, bold word.
