OHIO’S INVENTORS 5 OHIO INVENTORS FOR YOU TO KNOW
2
Do you know who this man is or what he invented?
3
This man is Garrett Morgan, Ohio inventor. Here are two of his most important inventions:
4
Garrett Morgan invented the first traffic signal. It looked like this:
5
Garrett Morgan also invented the first gas mask that looked like this:
6
Here are some other pictures of Garrett Morgan’s gas mask:

Garrett Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky in 1877, moved to Cincinnati, Ohio when he was 14 years old, lived here for 4 years and then moved to Cleveland, Ohio. He was very clever in many areas of work including tailoring, newspaper publishing and hair care products. His two most famous inventions were the gas mask and traffic signal.

Do you know who this man is?
9
This is Ohio inventor, Granville Woods. Here are some of his inventions:
10
The steam boiler furnace.
11
Railway telegraph This invention sent messages from a moving train to a station on the ground.
12
AIR BRAKES FOR TRAINS
13
Granville Woods was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1856. He took a job with the Danville and Southern railroad in Missouri as a fireman (the person who put fuel in the burner to create steam). He eventually became a railroad engineer. He was fascinated with electricity and many of his electrical inventions were for railroads.
14
He eventually settled in Cincinnati. Granville Woods had more than two dozen electrical inventions for electrical devices for the railroad and ways to improve the flow of electricity for trains. The inventions for which he is known are the electric air brake, the railway telegraph and the steam boiler furnace.
15
WHO IS THIS MAN?
16
THIS IS CHARLES KETTERING, AN OHIO INVENTOR. HIS INVENTIONS IMPROVED THE AUTO- MOBILE.
17
KETTERING INVENTED THE ELECTRIC STARTER FOR CARS INCLUDING THE CAR BATTERY, GENERATOR AND STARTER MOTOR. KETTERING ALSO INVENTED ELECTRIC LIGHTS FOR CARS.
18
Charles Kettering was born in Loudenville, Ohio in 1876 and died in 1958. He lived much of his life in and around Dayton, Ohio. He invented many electrical inventions for the automobile including the electric starter, electric lights, battery, generator and other items. Kettering’s inventions made the foundation for the Delco Company.

Do you know who this man is? Maybe this will help!!!
20
STILL DON’T KNOW???? TRY THIS NEXT SLIDE!!!
21
RIGHT, IT’S THOMAS EDISON!!!
22
Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio in 1847 and lived until 1931. He invented dozens of electrical machines and tools among which are the stock ticker, phonograph, electric light, movie projector, and many other items. He started many companies, a movie company, a recording company, an electric generating company. The most famous of all his companies is General Electric. Edison started the idea of a company full of researchers to work on many ideas and inventions at once.
23
I’m sure you’ll know who this is “Wright” away!!!!
24
That’s right!!! Orville and Wilbur Wright!!!
26
This is the famous picture of the first flight of a powered airplane in world history. It took place on December 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
27
Wilbur Wright was born in 1867 and Orville in 1871. They lived most of their lives in and around Dayton, Ohio. They published a newspaper and had a bicycle building and repair shop. Both men were fascinated with the idea of flight. They read about men such as Octave Chanute and Otto Lilienthal who had made manned gliders. The Wright brothers made their own manned gliders to experiment with different shapes of wings.
28
They then invented a wind tunnel where they could experiment with different shaped wings in model form. From their experiments they built an airplane powered with a gasoline motor they built themselves. They called the airplane the Wright Flyer, after one of their bicycles. They were the first people to make a machine powered by itself and capable of carrying people into flight.
