Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students Joseph S. Renzulli
2
Identification System “There is no such thing as a perfect identification system!” Renzulli Each district and school considers the differences in population, gifted beliefs, programs and resources, and how best to serve the gifted students. With this in mind, we have adopted the Renzulli scale for identifying students’ unique behavioral characteristics.
3
Purpose for Using the Scales Identifying Students Assess Students Strengths Screen and Select Students The first four scales are the most consistent with our gifted education program and services. Teachers should consider the behaviors in the other scales, but only if they are relevant – such as math, reading, and maybe the arts. You will complete a minimum of 4 scales.
4
Guidelines for Using the Scales Examine each scale separately. Each scale will provide teachers with information to develop learning's specific to where a student has scored high. Example – A student who scores high in Motivation may really benefit and enjoy an Independent Study. DO NOT ADD THE SCORES FROM THE VARIOUS SCALES TOGETHER TO FORM A TOTAL SCORE. DO NOT MODIFY OR ABBREIVATE THE SCALES BY REDUCING THE NUMBER OF ITEMS ON EACH SCALE.

Let’s Practice! The Training Activity WILL be a little different from the actual rating process. 1. Examine the Scales with a partner. 2. Match KEY concepts with the SRBCSS- R scale items. (4 scales) 3. Compare responses with key and discuss variations in responses. There is no one correct answer. 4. Which items are we disagreeing about?

Questions? After you have completed the Renzulli Scales for your students, please turn them into the AIG Coach upon completion.
