Endocrine System By Katie Ust
2
Function Regulate the body Regulates metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, and mood
3
Homeostasis Homeostasis regulates the internal environment of the body, and keeps it balanced Hypothalamus, which is the control center of the endocrine system, mediates between the nervous and endocrine systems to maintain homeostasis
4
Negative Feedback Negative feedback is used by the endocrine system to maintain homeostasis by regulating the secretion of relevant hormones.
5
Thyroid Function The hypothalamus can detect the inadequacy of thyroid hormones like thyroxine It releases hypothalamin and activaves the pituitary cells responsible for secretion The anterior pituitary releases thyrotropin, which activates thyroxine to fix the hormone imbalance to create homeostasis.
6
Diabetes Type 1 Results from the body’s failure to produce insulin and requires the person to inject insulin. Type 2 Results from insulin resistance in which cells fail to use insulin properly. Also results from high blood pressure and lifestyle choices
7
Conn’s Syndrome Caused by adrenal hyperplasia and adrenal carcinoma Surgery and medications such as spironolactone or eplerenone, which block the effect of aldosterone. Without treatment sufferers usually have poorly controled high blood pressure, stroke, or heart disease.
