Was sentenced to life in prison for Conspiracy. Fought to stop the Apartheid. Had an under militant resistance. President of the ANC. Married more than once. First black president for South Africa. International spokesman. Got kicked out of college. Had first legal black firm in S. Africa.

Childhood Born on July 18, 1918 – Eastern Cape of South Africa Very intelligent

Education Attended Wesleyan at Fort Beaufort. – Meets life long friend Olive Tambo. – Asked to leave for participating in a boycott. Studies law at University of Witwatersrand.

Troubles in Country Apartheid – Blacks weren’t allowed many rights. Corrupt government

Activist Participated in boycott in college. – Asked to leave because of it. Oliver Tambo and him join the ANC () Created the youth group of the ANC

Activist Spoke out about the government Accused for conspiring a plan to overthrow the government. Wanted for conspiracy.

Hiding Went into hiding. Had an underground resistance. Became very well known during this time.

Jailed Was finally captured and sentenced to life in prison. All the colored people declared for his release. Became a national hero to blacks for his courage. Got his release 27 years later.

Later-life Accomplishments Became the first black president of South Africa. Won the Nobel Piece Prize in 1993. After his presidency he was a worldwide spokesman.

Mother died at a young age. Grew up living on a sports complex. Had AIDS. Stadium named after him. Won NCAA Championsh ips in both singles and doubles. Played tennis at UCLA. First African American to win a major title. Started an AIDS foundation. Was a big influence on desegregation of sports in America.

Childhood Born in 1943 in Richmond, Virginia. – Town is Segregated. Mother died in 1950. – Dad raises family working as a grounds keeper of a sports complex. This is where Arthur picks up tennis.

Early Life Was fascinated with the game the first time he picked up a racquet. His skills were able to get him a scholarship to UCLA. College is where he would get recognition for his abilities.

College Career Won a singles and doubles championship. – Selected to play in Davis Cup. Graduated with a bachelors degree in Business Administration.

Early Professional Career Played in the Davis Cup in 1963. – Took this offer with great pride. – This made him the first African American to play for the United States. Debuts in Wimbledon in the year 1963.

Professional Career Became one of the most prominent tennis players of his time. – Won the U.S. Open in 1969. – Wins Australian Open in 1970. Becomes President of Association of Tennis Professionals in 1974. In 1975, wins Wimbledon and World Champions Championships, Become #1 Tennis player in the world.

Career Cont. While being Black his is a prominent figure and example of overcoming prejudice. – First colored person to be ranked the #1 tennis player in the world. Plays last tournament win in 1978 with a win at Pacific Southwest Championships. Has heart-attack in 1979. – Retires from competitive tennis in 1980.

Captain of Davis Cup team from 1981-85. Arrested for anti-apartheid demonstration. 1988- diagnosed with HIV diagnosis. – 1992- announces he has AIDS, founds Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of Aids. – 1993- dies of AIDS pneumonia.

Legacy First African-American to play professional tennis. Showed how colored people could become something if they put the effort. Showed anti-apartheid. Inducted into hall of fame. Main stadium at U.S. Open named after him.

Biggest Impact Mandela had the biggest impact in his society. Made blacks in his country able to vote. Made the government less corrupt
