2 SOLAR ECLIPSES Solar Eclipse- caused by the moon making a small shadow on the Earth. –Moon crosses in front of the sun. –Moon is in a new moon position. –Only a small number of people can see a solar eclipse. –Occurs during the day.

5 SOLAR ECLIPSE There are two parts to the shadow. –Umbra- darkest part –Penumbra- lighter part Those people standing in the umbra see a total solar eclipse. Those people in the penumbra see a partial solar eclipse.

14 When will we see another Solar Eclipse??

15 LUNAR ECLIPSE Lunar eclipse- caused by the earth’s shadow covering the moon. –Earth crosses in the sun’s shadow. –Moon is in a full moon position. –Large numbers of people can see. –Occurs at night.

16 LUNAR ECLIPSE There are two parts to the shadow- umbra and penumbra. –When the moon is in the umbra a total lunar eclipse occurs. –When the moon is in the penumbra a partial lunar eclipse occurs.
