TODAY’S OBJECTIVE: IDENTIFY MY STUDENT SERVICE LEARNING REQUIREMENT Student Service Learning

What is Student Service Learning? Student (that’s you) Service = volunteering and helping your community Learning = learning how to be a good citizen Turn and Talk: What things have you done to help in your community?

Why do I need to do student service learning? To graduate from high school. You need 75 hours of student service learning to graduate from high school. 45 of those hours can be earned during middle school while you are at school. Any hours earned outside of school through church, scouts, etc. cannot be counted until you are in high school.

Our Project Our goal = To get more people at NMS to recycle paper. How? Step 1: Learning about recycling in Science Class. Step 2: Educating other people in the building about how to recycle and the benefits of recycling. Step 3: Modeling good recycling practices by volunteering time during the school day to pick up the paper recycling around the building.

Step 1: Learning about Recycling ALL Mixed Paper Newspaper junk mail magazines cereal box paper phonebooks corrugated cardboard Materials Not Accepted No paper contaminated with food, oil, or grease No paper heavily coated with plastic No tissues or paper towels. No candy wrappers. No wire, like staples. What can be recycled in the blue bins?

Step 1: Learning about Recycling ALL COMINGLED RECYCLING aluminum cans glass steel cans #1 & #2 plastic containers (milk jugs and soda bottles) Materials Not Accepted No caps No containers still containing liquid/food What can be recycled in the hallway and cafeteria bins?

Step 1: Learning about Recycling One ton of paper requires the use of 98 tons of various resources. Paper made from recycled paper instead of virgin fiber requires 70% less energy. Making paper from recycled materials can result in 74% less air pollution and 35% less water pollution, rather than making paper from wood pulp. (EPA) Recycling one ton of paper saves around 17 trees, 463 gallons of oil, 6,953 gallons of water and 3 cubic yards of landfill space. Turn and talk: Which of these statistics surprises you?

Step 1: Learning about Recycling Recycling is actually the last thing you can do to help the environment! 1. Reduce = reduce the stuff you buy so that you can reduce the junk you throw out! 2. Reuse = reuse something as many times as you can before you throw it out. 3. AFTER reducing and reusing, try to recycle everything that you can! Turn and Talk: What are some ways that you reduce and reuse?

Step 2: Educating Others Every single person needs to help! Many teachers and students at NMS do not recycle paper. Turn and Talk: Why do you think that is? What can we do to change that?

Step 2: Educating Others In your group, come up with a plan on how to educate more of NMS citizens about recycling. What will you do? How will you do it? Why do you think it will make a difference? How will you educate others outside of NMS?

Step 3: Modeling Recycling We can help others to see how important we think recycling is by actually recycling! Recycle in all of your classes. Tell your other teachers about recycling. Help students who do not know what to recycle. And…we will go to other classrooms and help to make sure that their recycling goes to the right place!

Your Responsibilities Working in teams of 3 to go to certain classrooms to empty the recycling bin. (park the cart and split up the work) Working quietly (in the hallways and in the classrooms) Working quickly (you are missing science class and need to get back as quick as you can) Working responsibly (no running or fooling around) THIS IS YOUR JOB. IT SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

Dumpster Tour! Let’s go outside and see how the recycling is separated for the trucks to pick up.
