Project #1: Me in 30 seconds Objective: students will be able to answer the question: “Tell me about yourself” in an interview setting, with proper etiquette, technique and clarity.

What is a “Me in 30 second statement?” It is a simple way to present to someone else a balanced understanding of who you are. It piques the interest of a listener who invites you to “Tell me a little about yourself,” and it provides a brief and compelling answer to the question. “Why should I hire you?” ERS: Employment Services

Piques: to excite (interest, curiosity, etc.): Her curiosity was piqued by the gossip. to arouse an emotion or provoke to action: to pique someone to answer a challenge.

What should this statement include? Hello, a brief personal introduction, First and Last name, (no nick names) with firm handshake with a smile. What position you are applying for. *Or if this is used in real life for an interview for a scholarship or special program you would insert your future school or career goals. A few special character traits or adaptive skills that set you apart from other applicants.

Other important points to consider: Keep your “Me in 30 second statement” brief. People only listen for 30-60 seconds. This will indicate you are clearly focused and waste no time getting to the point. Speak in present tense Remember your audience. Make sure your words, body language, dress and mannerisms are geared toward the interviewers age and status.

Other points cont.. Make your statement NATURAL! This project is a concise way to break down and organize your thoughts. In no way should the statement sound rehearsed or “robotic.” This is one of your first impressions with the interviewer. Make it count! ERS: Employment Services

Example of a “Me in 30 Second Statement” “Hello, pleasure to meet you. My name is Robert Jones, and I am currently looking for a job in youth services. I have 10 years of experience working with youth agencies. I have a bachelors degree in outdoor education. I raise money, train leaders, and organize units. I have raised over $100,000 each of the last six years. I consider myself a good public speaker, and I have a good sense of humor. ERS: Employment Services
