Two Projects Automotive - AUSAP 21 months (July 1998 - March 2000) Defence - SPIDER Feasibility Study: 5 months (July - December 2000) Main Project: 21 months ( April 2001 - Dec 2002) 2

The AUSAP project is designed to demonstrate to the local automotive industry that adopting the International Standard for the Exchange of Product Data (STEP) will result in a significant improvement in productivity, competitiveness and profitability ($$$). 4

The Target Market Australia has 4 passenger OEM’s: Ford, GM-Holden, DC-Mitsubishi and Toyota. These are supported by more than 300 component suppliers, about 30 of which have significant export contracts. These are to companies such as GM, Daimler Chrysler, BMW, Toyota, Hyundai and Maserati. »5

A unique combination of OEMs, 1st and 2nd Tier suppliers joining together to help themselves lever the benefits of advances in data exchange through the adoption of STEP What is AUSAP? 21 month project Total Aus$1 Million 85 separate transfers 6

Project Aims  Demonstrate that STEP "works" between the popular CAD/CAM systems in use in the Australian Automotive Industry as a transfer mechanism for 3D solid models.  Communicate this widely to the industry, especially the smaller component manufacturers and tooling industry.  Provide for an easy path for adopting STEP, through building and then making available a pool of experience in implementing STEP.  Develop a register of STEP experienced contacts from within the industry. 7

Project Deliverables - 1  Raise awareness of STEP by :  Demonstrating the implementation on-site with real business partners as the trial participants, using real products.  Documenting the experiences - high quality, full colour quarterly Information Circulars - 7 in total over a 21 month project period.  Disseminating that experience to around 500 companies via: snailmail, email and a website, plus  Live interaction between project participants, and some of the 95% of companies which were not actively involved, by conducting 2 series of Workshops - in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney. These had approx 150 attendees at each series.  8

Project Deliverables - 2  Encourage uptake of STEP by:  Involving CAD/CAM software developers and vendors, especially their local offices or agents.  Developing and publishing a business case study.  Creating an industry network of STEP experienced personnel  Producing a 12 minute video, featuring the actual trial participants themselves. This is available as a VHS tape or CD-ROM (preferred method of delivery).  9
