In the Australian "outback", the vast desert and semi-arid terrain that covers three quarters of the continent, its population has fallen (as sheep farming has declined in importance). For over a century, this agricultural activity, was very important in the Australian economy. Although agriculture remains one of Australia's major economic activities, it has been overtaken by other sectors, including mining, engineering, and other modern industries.
