3 Curriculum Goals Español Uno Course Essential Learning To build an understanding of: Basic Spanish pronunciation and reading skills Basic structures, expressions & cultural norms of the Spanish-speaking world Learning & studying strategies/techniques

4 Curriculum Goals Course Essential Questions: How do I initiate, carry on and conclude a basic conversation? How do I write effectively in Spanish? How do I share cultural understanding? How do I talk about events? How do I ask for and offer information?

5 Curriculum Goals Course Essential Skills: Students will follow themes and know... How to make adjectives agree with the people they describe (masculine/feminine/ singular/plural) and put them in the correct place. How to use gustar/encantar/dar igual with indirect object pronouns (me/te/le) to express preferences. How to use the correct subject pronoun to say who is doing the action How to conjugate regular present tense verbs in the singular and plural forms.

6 Curriculum Goals How to conjugate some irregular verbs in the present tense and use near future. How to correctly use definite articles and indefinite articles How to use appropriate time-telling expressions in Spanish. How to use “Hay” to express there is/are. How to use negatives in Spanish and how this differs from English. How to make polite requests, use informal commands and direct object pronouns. How to describe daily routine with the use of reflexive verbs. How to express how you feel and name basic body parts.

7 Materials & Resources: This Course is primarily taught using the Expresate 1 (Holt) text as well as the accompanying workbooks and supplementary materials. The text is used to present grammar and vocabulary and incorporate them into realistic communicative contexts. Additional materials will be used and placed in student binders. Culture will be presented through literature, media activities, and research of traditions within the Spanish-speaking world.

8 How you can be proactive: Some possibilities to consider to help your child learn Spanish include: * Watching movies/t.v. in Spanish * Eating at restaurants where the staff speaks Spanish * Visiting a Spanish-speaking place * Being part of an exchange program with someone in a Spanish-speaking country * Befriending a native Spanish speaker * Attending multi-cultural events * Playing games in Spanish (quia.com) * Learning about famous Spanish-speakers and their backgrounds!

9 Website Choose Maria Roman (staff section) on the CHS page on the district’s site. Click on your child’s class to view course guidelines, behavioral expectations and grading scale. In the sidebar click icons for weblinks, power points, etc. Homework is not posted on the web, it is the student’s responsibility to write homework in planner. CHS uses Quia… The district’s site can answer many questions and acquaint you with school policies, events, faculty, facilities…
