Why is the poem structured distinctly between Beowulf as a young man and as an old man? Why is Geatland cursed with a dragon? What does the dragon symbolize? What does the stolen cup symbolize? Why does Beowulf refuse the throne the first time? Compare the fight with the dragon to the fight with Grendel and Grendel’s mother. How are the battles similar? How are they different? What are the important values in the poem that reflect Anglo-Saxon culture?

Finish the poem (through section 43) and record the dialectical journal entries for each section. Bring a vocabulary word* for Thesaurus Thursday! *It must be a vocabulary word that you earnestly want to use in your writing and conversations. YOUR DIALECTICAL JOURNAL FOR BEOWULF IS DUE ON THURSDAY.
