Word Problems: Variables on Both Sides Chapter 4.2 Part 2
2
Define a variable, write an equation and solve. Josh and Carl are driving the same distance. Josh drives at 50 mph and Carl drives at 60 mph. If it takes Josh 1 hour longer than Carl, how long does each drive? What you should know: Distance = (Rate)(Time) Variable (Unknown): Time x = time it takes Carl to drive the distance x + 1 = time it takes Josh to drive the distance
3
Josh and Carl are driving the same distance. Josh drives at 50 mph and Carl drives at 60 mph. If it takes Josh 1 hour longer than Carl, how long does each drive? D = rt Josh: D=(50)(x+1) Carl: D=(60)(x) Since they went the same distance, we can set the two equations equal to each other. 50(x+1) = 60(x)
4
Solve: 50(x+1)=60(x) 50(x+1)=60(x)Distribute 50x+50=60xMove variables -50x -50x 50 = 10xDivide by the number that is in front of the variable. x = 5
5
What does x = 5 mean? x = time it takes Carl to drive the distance. x = 5, it takes Carl 5 hours to drive the distance. If it takes Josh 1 hour longer: it take Josh 6 hours

Mini-Worksheets If you write on a separate paper, please don’t write on the worksheet, so that I can reuse it. Try two of the word problems and 10 of the other problems. Any extras=extra credit
