4
Mid-Series Check-In Let’s “check in” & make some connections with the past two sessions.
5
What are some key points that you remember from the first & second session? How can those points help in unlocking your students’ potential? How can those points help in unlocking your teacher potential?
6
Objectives ✤ Hone critical thinking skills while looking closely at current events ✤ Sharpen problem solving and prediction skills ✤ Practice making decisions and taking action based on those decisions ✤ Adapt the lesson to suit your class level

Let’s Think About It It’s our responsibility to know what is happening in the world today. Do you agree with this? Why or why not?
13
What do you know of... SOMALIA What? Where? Who? How? Why?
14
What do you think the story will be about?
15
Let’s Listen In Let’s listen/watch a brief news report on Somalia. While you listen, look at the worksheet with some key words/phrases. Circle or underline the ones you hear.
16
Investigator’s Focus With a partner, check if you have the same circled words/phrases. Now, ask some questions (Y/N, WH-ques) based on those words you circled. For example...
17
severe malnutrition How many children are severely malnourished? Who are malnourished? What is causing this malnutrition?
18
Let’s listen/watch again. This time, write sentences using the words/phrases from the sheet. Then, compare the sentences with your partner.
19
Are your sentences similar to the news report? Do they answer some of the questions you wrote down?
20
Problem-Solution Work with a small group of 3 or 4 to answer the questions on the worksheet. Discussion is fine. Please be prepared to share some of your ideas.
21
Issues of Today With a partner, think of 2-3 problems that your country or city face today. Why are these important to know?
22
Teacher Hat How would you change or adapt this lesson on Somalia? Work with someone who teaches the same grade and think of how you would adapt the lesson.
23
Teacher Hat With your Bangkok Post article, think of an activity for your class. GradeLanguage level Skills Focus Lesson Objective
24
Classroom Implications ✤ What are some key points that you think are the most appropriate for your class? Why? ✤ How can you stimulate your students to be more aware of what is going on today?
