St Patrick’s Day Saint Patrick's Day is a cultural and religious celebration that happens every year on the 17 th of March to mark the death of the saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. The day celebrates St Patrick and Irish traditions, customs and legends. People wear green and eat corned beef and cabbage on this day.

St Patrick’s story… St Patrick was born of Roman parents a long time ago. He was taken to Ireland as a slave when he was 16, and then later escaped! St Patrick returned to Ireland later as a missionary. A missionary means St Patrick was on a religion mission to spread the word and faith of Christianity.

St Patrick travelled village to village talking about Christianity and established monasteries, churches and schools in Ireland. St Patrick died on March 17 th, 461. Three is Ireland’s magic number and the three petals that make up the shamrock are supposed to bring good luck. The three leaves also represent the Trinity in the Christian religion (Father, Son and the Holy Spirit)

On St Patricks day… People wear green clothes. Irish music is played. Irish songs are sung. St Patrick’s day is also celebrated in countries such as Canada, United States of America and Australia.
