Standard ELA7R1: The student demonstrates comprehension and shows evidence of a warranted and responsible explanation of a variety of literary and informational texts. For literary texts, the student identifies the characteristics of various genres and produces evidence of reading that: b. Interprets a character’s traits, emotions, or motivations and gives supporting evidence from a text. e. Identifies events that advance the plot and determines how each event explains past or present action(s) or foreshadows future action(s). f. Analyzes characterization (dynamic and static) in prose and plays as delineated through a character’s thoughts, words, speech patterns, and actions; the narrator’s description; and the thoughts, words, and actions of other characters. h. Identifies and analyzes how an author’s use of words creates tone and mood giving supporting evidence from the text.

I CAN… Analyze a narrative text (memoir) Make connections to narrative texts (memoirs) and my own life. Write a narrative piece that meets/exceeds standards for the 7 th grade. What else do you think we CAN do for today?

Share, Share, Share What did we talk about yesterday? What did you learn yesterday? Who wants to share their stories from yesterday? (10 minutes)

Before reading, MAKE connections, questioned and visualized. In addition, good readers also make inferences. Inferring is taking information you know, adding new information, and coming up with a new or improved idea.

Example of Inference “You see a woman with a frown on her face holding a leash in her hand. You know a dog leash would usually indicate that she owns a dog. You know a frown usually means you are unhappy. What can you infer about the woman, the leash, and the frown?”

What can you infer? What can you infer about War of Wall? What do you think it will be about based on the title?

Read as a class “The War of the Wall”. As you read…. Write what you feel about what is going on. Does it make you sad? Can you relate? Jot notes about the story so we can discuss when we are finished.

Response to Literature 2 Add this to your Table of Contents Respond to the story we have read. How does it make you feel? What would you do in Lou’s situation?

Closing (Place on Parking Lot) The 3 W’s What did you learn today? What did you already know about memoirs? What do you still want to know about memoirs?

QOTD The Spectator The spectator thrived on the sights and sounds of this magical place. On the edge of his seat, he waited for contact to be made. Then, it happened! Like a rocket, the ball scorched the wind, traveling past the mound and above the outstretched gloves of the outfielders. It soared over the fence and beyond the scoreboard. At that moment, the conversations melted into a single roar. Time stood still, as the baseball was catapulted into another world. Which of the following words most clearly describes the mood the author establishes in this passage? A. bored B. excited C. frustrated D. confused
