Background The University is responding to the financial crisis and cuts in public funding due to the recession Court asked the SMG to present outline plans for meeting cost reduction in September 2010 SMG presented initial plans to Court in February 2011 Plans developed to address a predicted £35m gap (reducing cost by £20m; growing income by £15m) –Strategic –Balanced –Phased Modern Languages and Cultures - proposal to restructure to improve research and postgraduate activity with lower costs

Proposal is NOT To shut the School of Modern Languages and Cultures The University WANTS A strong SMLC that contributes to the Universitys strategic ambition

Strategic Context The College of Arts has some of the best research areas in the university, but also some of the poorest including SMLC –Research income lower and postgraduate activity less than our peers SMLC has very strong demand from well qualified students in some core languages and cultures Lower demand in other languages University teaches more languages outside than inside SMLC (Adult Education, Language Centre, Centre for East European Studies) Are we teaching the right languages, at the right level, in the right way, in the right places

Summaries of the key points arising from meetings and correspondence will be made available online The Panels draft report will be shared with the School before it is submitted The School can submit a commentary to accompany the Panels report Senate will discuss the report (and commentary) at its meeting on 28 April Court will consider the report (and commentary) at its meeting on 11 May Consultation process
