Dreamweaver 4.01 On The Importance of Color

Logic Color is one of the most important decisions in making a website. Colors that clash, or don’t work together, can destroy the early-on chances of a website succeeding. A lot of thought goes into color, for instance Facebook was designed in blue because Mark Zuckerberg is colorblind, but he can see blue. This made the site colorblind accessible from the get-go, which was a perk. Psychologically, blue is a calming color, which generally works for a social media site.

Consideration Your content will dictate your color choices. For instance, a website about potatoes will probably use neutral colors, like browns, and lean towards reds and purples, as those are also the colors of some potatoes, playing into the theme. For a website about adult diapers, however, the subject matter is embarrassing so using browns would probably be a bad idea, instead opting for bright colors to make the user feel happy or energetic.

Psychology Colors can spark specific feelings if used right. A website that blogs about being angry at the government would probably use blacks, reds, and oranges in their color choices, whereas… A website about girl’s toys would probably be white, pink, red, and other other colors associated with the gender lines. Do not mistake this psychology as sexism, there are still expectations, regardless of social progress, that certain colors will be associated with certain subject matter. It’s statistically proven!

The next few slides should probably be familiar if you’ve taken an art class, but still need to be understood and implemented during your group’s choosing of colors. The way colors interact is vitally important.

Start by making 3 circles in a triangle pattern. Label them each with a primary color. Red BlueYellow

Mix their neighbors to make the secondary colors. VioletOrange Green

This is your basic color wheel. VioletOrange Green Red BlueYellow

Complementary colors Complementary colors are directly across from each other on the color wheel and when used together, cause maximum contrast. AAA

COMPLEMENTARY colors VioletOrange Green Red BlueYellow

Analogous Colors Usually termed as coming in groups of 3 or five, analogous colors consist of a particular color and its direct neighbors.

ANALOGOUS colors

Triadic Color Any three colors that are equally spaced from each other, forming a perfect triangle, are triadic. Red, Yellow, Blue, for instance.

Triadic colors

Split-Complementary Colors This is a tough one to explain. Pick a single color, for instance, red. Green is its complementary color, however… Instead, choose each color directly bordering green instead.

Split-Complementary

Warm and Cool The color wheel is also divided into warm and cool colors, with each half triggering a generally consistent psychological response. Warm colors look vivid and give us a sense of energy and comfort. They also appear closer to the viewer. Cool colors look calm and give us a refreshing feeling. Cool colors appear farther from the viewer which makes them perfect for background colors.

HEX Codes HEX Codes are universal and allow you to guarantee that your colors stay consistent from program to program. HEX values start with a hashtag and then six numbers/letters (0-9 plus A thru F): These numbers are in 3 pairs, and each pair represents the RGB color channels. #00FF66 – 00 (Red) - FF (Blue) - 66 (Green)

Choosing your own colors https://color.adobe.com/ This interactive website allows you to fine tune color choices for your website and gives you the HEX codes to use in Photoshop and Dreamweaver. If you know what your website is about by now, use this tool to decide on what colors you think your website should have, and using this tool, write down the HEX codes for all the colors it gives you.
