3. EASTER ISLAND- RAPA NUI Located 2,294 miles off the coast of continental Chile, Easter Island (also known as Rapa Nui) is the most remote inhabited island on earth. The island is believed to have been settled by voyagers from the Marquesas in 400 AD. Visitors sometimes refer to Easter Island as the world's largest museum; hundreds of monolithic Moai dot the landscape. Many of these massive stone figures can be viewed at the Rano Raraku quarry where they were carved. Others line the coast, erected on numerous ceremonial platforms, or ahu. Other noteworthy sights include the Orongo ceremonial center, Anakena Bay, and the Rano Kau volcano crater.
