What Is It? Nuclear technology involves the reactions of the nucleus in the atom. Electricity can be created using the fission method. This can used to power almost anything that needs electricity. In 2004 nuclear power made up 15% of the worlds electricity. The exposing of some foods to ionizing radiation is used to destroy some of the bacteria in the product. In medicine x-rays are made up of nuclear parts. Radiation therapy is a form of treatment for cancer.

Continued……… Nuclear technology is used in the exploration of oil and gas. In road construction gauges consisting of nuclear related parts are used to determine soils. Nuclear parts can be seen all around today from smoke detectors to luminescent lights.

Impact On History (nuclear weapons) Very important events in history have been shaped by nuclear technology. The Cold War which was a stalemate between the United States and the USSR was not fought by military means, but through negotiations. It escalated into the threat of a Global Thermonuclear War. Weapons of Mass Destruction were made for both sides by scientists. In the US this making of weapons was known as the Manhattan Project. The Cuban Missile Crisis was a struggle between the United States and Cuba. Cuba stated that they had nuclear missiles that were capable of reaching the US. Though this never turned into reality this was still an important event in history.
