2 The theme is the message, or lesson learned, in a text. What will be the message of your story? What will the main character learn? What statement or observation will your story make about human nature, society, and/or the world Hatchet is a suspenseful novel, the main character Brian get lost in the Canadian Wildness when the plane he is in crashes. 4 Literary Elements, Strategies, & Techniques Themes Never Give Up Perseverance and Determination Coming of age-growing up Fear Learning Foreshadowing The gift of the hatchet Pilot instruct Brian on how to fly the plane Setting New York Canadian Wilderness Characters Brian, a 13 year old boy Main character Pilot Brian’s Mom Point of View Third-person Omniscient Symbolism / Motifs / Metaphors / Imagery / Symbols

5 Reflection on Hatchet The author showed how with little imagination a young teenage boy can take care of himself in the wilderness. It hard to think how Brian felt when the pilot died and he had to fly the airplane until he crashed it. My church youth group went on a camping trip and one of the kids got sick with a rash from poison ivy or something. This is not as bad as Brian was when he ate a lot of choke berries. The story would not have been as suspenseful if Brian had found the survival kit earlier.
