Nicolaus Copernicus Challenged the Ptolemaic Universe (the idea that the earth is the center of the universe/geocentric) Developed heliocentric theory that the earth was the center of the universe.

Tycho Brahe Opposed Copernicus’ heliocentric theory, but in trying to disprove it, actually provided more support for that model

Johannes Kepler Agreed with heliocentric theory (sun at center) and also said that planets revolved in elliptical rather than circular patterns.

Galileo Galilei Used a telescope and discovered mountains on the moon and Jupiter’s moons. Wrote a pamphlet and church was threatened, forced him to recant (take it back)

Francis Bacon Stated that the universe worked like a machine. Also believed that people needed to experience the world.

Isaac Newton Believed that the universe was rational and predictable. Established theory of gravity and laws of motion.
