 An element of art, space refers to distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece. Space can be positive or negative, open or closed, shallow or deep, and two- dimensional or three-dimensional. New Element of Art: Space http://arthistory.about.com/cs/glossaries/g/s_space.htm

 Jacques-Henri Lartigue is known as one of the most profound 20th century photographers who shaped and lead the way for modern photography. Working in virtual obscurity until 1962, when a chance meeting revealed his work to the world! Though best known for the photographs he took as a child, Lartigue continued to photograph, as well as paint, as an adult. Jacques-Henri Lartigue June 13, 1894 – September 12, 1986

Jacques Henri Lartigue

 Very late in his life, Lartigue became hailed as one of the founders of modern photography yet in reality, he was the ultimate amateur who had the passion and the drive to create remarkable series of family albums which displayed a portrait of the turn-of-the-century France, as it was portrayed through the eyes of a very young boy, from the age of 8 to 18. 22  Positive Space: Positive space is the area or part of a painting's composition that the subject occupies.  For instance, the positive space could be a vase of flowers in a still life painting, a person's face in a portrait, etc.  Negative Space: the space between objects or the parts of an object.  For example the area between a cup and its handle. Also the space between an object and the edges of the canvas, i.e. the space around an object. Positive and Negative Space

 Open negative is where you have negative space around four sides of a subject. No part of the subject touches the edge of the canvas or paper. There is "empty" space all around it.  Closed negative space is where the subject stretches across the composition to touch the edge. Part of the subject closes off a part of the negative space, turning it into a smaller shape. Open and Closed Space

Jacques Henri Lartigue, 1932

 This refers to depth of field meaning close- up (shallow) or distant (deep). Shallow or Deep Space

 The rule of space says that in order to portray movement, context and the idea that the photo is bigger than just the part that you’re seeing, you need to leave clutter free ‘white’ spaces.  For example if you’re photographing a runner, give him a space to run into. Don’t photograph him with all the space in the world behind him because this doesn’t help the viewer picture the forward motion & the space he has yet to run. If you’re making a portrait of a woman laughing at something not in the photo, leave space in the direction where she is laughing. This leads the viewer to wonder what’s just beyond the boundaries of the photo. What is she laughing at? Rule of Space

 Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable. Principle of Design: Balance
