Until 1914, there had not been any real European conflict. However, many European nations were committing to the policy of imperialism and conquering/controlling foreign land.

1 June 28 1914, Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife of Austria-Hungary were assassinated by Serbians.

2 Alliances that were made between other European nations were put on alert. Alliances- pacts/agreements made with people to protect each other

On July 28, 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia refused to cooperate in the investigation of the murder of Francis Ferdinand. Alliances in Europe were mobilized as the 1 st world war began.

Germany Schlieffen Plan- quickly destroy France Avoid a 2 front war…fighting on only one side of your country. To get to France, they illegally invaded Belgium. This brought Great Britain into war. G.B. used propaganda to ruin German reputation by calling them “barbarians” and “huns”
