Equations
3
LEQ How do we determine if the solution(s) to an equation are correct?
4
REMEMBER The solution to an equation is the value(s) that make it true. It is possible for an equation to have no solutions or to have all solutions which is called an identity. It is also possible to have an extraneous solution which is when you solve the equation, but the solution is not allowed because it violates a mathematical law.

Word Problems
10
Lesson Essential Question: What are some of the different strategies that can be used to solve word problems?
11
Proper Steps to get started… We all know that word problems are a good time, but some students don’t know how to get started. Here are three tips to make it easier: 1) Read the stinking problem! Then reread the problem. Then re-re-read the problem! 2) If you still aren’t sure, see step number 1. 3) Define variables to identify what it is you are trying to find.

Bell Work: While driving home last night, Mr. Kelsey was travelling on Rt. 54 heading from Turbotville to Danville at 63 mph. A giant groundhog ran across the road travelling perpendicular to Mr. Kelsey’s VW at 4 mph. Answer the following questions: 1) Was Mr. Kelsey furious when he smashed the offspring of Bigfoot and a groundhog? 2) How much damage do you think it did to his front fender and undercarriage? 3) How many obscenities did Mr. Kelsey yell while inspecting the damage and trying to figure out if he could make it home? 4) Did Mr. Kelsey scream in rage this morning when his ‘check engine’ light came on?

Radical Equations
39
LEQ How do we solve an equation with radical expressions?
40
Solving equations with radicals: You have to isolate the radical on one side of the equation, then square, cube, etc… both sides of the equation to cancel out the radical. Examples: Page 108 #’s 16, 20, 24, 30 Check to make sure the solutions work! We are going to reject complex solutions (imaginary numbers).
