Question 1: How do adventure authors hook and hold readers? “Many readers prefer adventure stories because of their fast-paced plot and the fact that they are relatively easy reads. While most of us would be uncomfortable in a real adventure situation, it IS comfortable to be able to be in the middle of an adventure as a reader. Particularly, if our every day life is dull and boring, adventure fiction provides a safe and exciting alternative. Since some adventure novels begin with ordinary people caught up in strange events and eventually gaining some sort of victory, we may be able to identify with the main characters.” (“A Few Thoughts On Adventure”) Fast-pace action Always risk and danger Some type of mental and/or physical struggle

Question 2: How do adventure writers persuade their readers? The tale may start slow, but the pacing always builds toward the middle and end. The action pulls the reader along and into the story building toward a culminating event. (“A Closer Look”) When thinking of the action/adventure genre, most people think of a tale filled with excitement and danger, a tale that will keep them on the edge of their seat, turning pages until the very end. (“A Closer Look”) Definable by the protagonist's journey or quest and the hardships he faces along the way. (“Characteristics of an Adventure Novel”)

Question 3: What is the relationship between adventure and truth? author can write the characters and events in such a way as to be relatable to real life. (“Characteristics of Fiction”) author creates a story that is believable, or at least relatable to true events, feelings or actions. (“Characteristics of Fiction”) setting is an aspect of a fiction novel that makes the story believable. Conflict can be external or internal, the conflict is what makes the story believable and relatable. (“Characteristics of Fiction”)

Question 4: What truths are best communicated through the adventure genre? Situations can, but may not have actually happened Setting is usually some where/place/time that is realistic Characters are normal people, not always “heroes” Characters are relatable

Question 5: What makes an adventure novel? A Likeable hero that is usually male. This character follows a moral code, even if it is sometimes outside the law and uses his skills and ingenuity to extricate himself and those with him from dangerous or volatile situations. (“A Closer Look”) There is always physical action. The violence in an action/adventure tale is usually graphically described. Main characters are often placed in extreme situations to make the book flow quickly. (“Characteristics of an Adventure Novel”) actions of the characters will usually pull the reader along; this gives the book an action-driven plot. (“Characteristics of an Adventure Novel”) resolution isn't always happy. (“Characteristics of Fiction”)

Question 6: Can adventure appeal to all types of readers? A traditional notion has been that males want action more than females. While men do prefer many of the adventure types mentioned above, women also enjoy adventure stories. Men would be more likely to pick up an adventure novel than a woman because of the stereotype of the action in these types of books. (“A Few Thoughts On Adventure”) “defined broadly as a group of narratives that emphasises ‘the primacy of action as opposed to the primacy of feeling’ (Richards 1989:2), is historically associated with a male readership.” (“Adventure Literature”) The adventure genre became, in the nineteenth century, a staple of boys’ reading. (“Adventure Literature”) I think more male readers are likely to pick up an adventure novel than a female, because the genre has been, in a way, described more or thought to appeal more to men. Large proportion of popular works in other genres, westerns, fantasy, and science fiction include action. (“A Few Thoughts On Adventure”)

Question 6 Continued DISASTER ADVENTURE: Stories involving some sort of dramatic natural disaster (earth quake, or tornado, tsunami, fire, and chemical danger) Focus is on the characters ability to survive and over come this disaster. (“A Few Thoughts On Adventure”) SUSPENSE: Focus is on unexpected and acute danger with limited time available to defeat it. Usually, there is a puzzle of some sort that the main character must solve. The setting is threatening. Plots often contain unexpected twists and turns. (“A Few Thoughts On Adventure”) THRILLER ADVENTURE: An adventure story with considerable action and narrow escapes (a chase, a rescue, a race against time, or some kind of showdown.) Main characters are usually male (that is changing) and heroic. The pace is fast, the plot contains surprises, and escapes from certain death or defeat are most difficult. The hero's survival is constantly at risk and betrayal is often unexpected. These stories often contain realistic details appropriate for the setting. (“A Few Thoughts On Adventure”) prey off paranoia FANTASY: This genre is obvious because of some of the main characters such as elves and dwarves. (“A Closer Look”) ROMANCE: This genre is a bit more low-key, but we do see it with several different couples throughout the entire tale. (“A Closer Look”)

Question 7: What makes this genre unique and separate from other genres? “Adventure fiction is distinguished by fast-paced, continuing action as well as the heroism and desperate survival of the main character.” (“A Few Thoughts On Adventure”) “Adventure fiction includes works ’characterized by an emphasis on physical and often violent action, exotic locales, and danger, generally with little character development.’" (“A Few Thoughts On Adventure”) Action is the main theme. It can be action coming from a conflict with nature, other people, of a mental conflict. The action is carried throughout the novel, the main character is always in some type of danger, taking some kind of risk, or going through some type of struggle (mental or physical) Always some type or mental and/or physical struggle for the main character. Most often defined by a protagonist that takes on some sort of heroic quest, where they must prove their own worthiness. (“A Closer Look”)

Question 8: What themes are brought out through adventure novels? “The adventure novel is a genre of novels that has adventure, an exciting undertaking involving risk and physical danger, as its main theme.” (“Adventure Novels”)
