NAACP used the Brown decision to challenge segregation in other areas Many southern cities and states segregated public transportation In December 1955, Rosa Parks, refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white person.

The local NAACP, led a one day boycott of the city buses in protest So successful, it expanded to approximately one year African-Americans carpooled and walked Devastated downtown businesses

A Baptist minister named Martin Luther King, Jr. was chosen to lead the boycott 1956: U.S. Supreme Court ordered buses integrated Victory for boycott

5 The Montgomery Bus Boycott
1957: King and Baptist Ministers start the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Organized nonviolent protests of violations of civil rights.
