Excel 2010 Spreadsheets

Starting at the Beginning What is a Spreadsheet? What are they for? What can they do? A spreadsheet is a powerful tool for organising information. They are used to carry out many calculations quickly. Once you know how to do it – they can do almost any maths that you could need!

Spreadsheet Terms … Spreadsheet - software (such as MS Excel) allows the user to do numerical calculations and produce charts of the results. Row - horizontal axis (designated by numbers) Column - vertical axis (designated by letters) Cell - intersection of row and column (designated by an address comprised of the column letter and row number e.g. A1) Block//Range - a rectangular group of one or more cells (identified by block coordinates (e.g. A1:G4)

how do they work? Rows (Side to Side) [Numbered] Columns (Up and Down) [Letters] Cell (Every one on these boxes is a cell) Every cell has a name to help you find the right one. It’s name starts with the column letter and then the row number. So, this cell is called what? F22

Using formulae Let’s use some formulae In Mathematics, when we write a number sentence we write the ‘=’ sign just before the answer. In a spreadsheet we write the ‘=’ sign first, before the sum. So when you want a spreadsheet to do a calculation: If you don’t it won’t work.

Using formulae Some Maths symbols are different when you use a Spreadsheet To calculate 3x4 You would enter =3*4 And the spreadsheet would show “ 12 ” (the answer!) Maths Symbol Spreadsheet Symbol ++ -- X * ÷ /

Exercises 1 Open Microsoft Excel Application Save and Rename Microsoft Excel Book 1 Olympic Village Flower Restocking Column headers Cell A1 enter American House Red/White/Blue Carnations Cell B2 enter House 101 Cell C2 enter House 102 Cell D2 enter House 103 Cell E2 enter House 104 Row headers Cell A3 enter Floor 1 Cell A4 enter Floor 2 Cell A5 enter Floor 3 Cell A6 enter Floor 4
