3  Black people were not allowed to sit in the front of city buses.  It was the law that black people had to give up their seat to white people.  On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested because she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man.

4  On December 5, 1955, people boycotted by refusing to ride city buses because Rosa Parks was arrested.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was their leader  They boycotted peacefully - nonviolent protest.

5  Some people gave free rides or donated money to show support to the boycotters.  Many boycotters were scared and angry because some people yelled at them and tried to hurt them. A bomb was even thrown in Dr. King’s house.  Dr. King told them to act with love even towards the people who treated them badly.

6  The city lost money because of all the people who refused to ride the buses.  On November 23, 1956, the US Supreme Court declared that public buses had to be desegregated all over America.  Dr. King was right - it was possible to change unfair laws without using violence.
