Black people were not allowed to sit in the front of city buses. It was the law that black people had to give up their seat to white people. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested because she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man.

On December 5, 1955, people boycotted by refusing to ride city buses because Rosa Parks was arrested. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was their leader They boycotted peacefully - nonviolent protest.

Some people gave free rides or donated money to show support to the boycotters. Many boycotters were scared and angry because some people yelled at them and tried to hurt them. A bomb was even thrown in Dr. King’s house. Dr. King told them to act with love even towards the people who treated them badly.

The city lost money because of all the people who refused to ride the buses. On November 23, 1956, the US Supreme Court declared that public buses had to be desegregated all over America. Dr. King was right - it was possible to change unfair laws without using violence.
