2 Setup your paper: At the top, write your name in the right corner. Write “Poetry Notes” in the middle of the top. Make two columns on your paper. Draw a line between. Terms will go on the left. Definitions will go on the right.

3 #1 PoetryWriting that uses words for sound, rhythm, and meaning.

4 #2 AcrosticType of poem in which the first letter of each line spells a word. Example: Can’t Avoid Trouble

5 #3 StanzaGroup of lines in a poem.

6 #4 AlliterationRepeating sounds at the start of each word. Example: She sells sea shells by the sea shore.

7 #5 OnomatopoeiaImitates the sound it describes. Example: flush, zoom, meow, bang

8 #6 PersonificationGives human traits to nonhumans. Example: The flag danced in the wind.

9 #7 SimileComparison using like or as. Example: I slept like a baby. She’s as cute as a button.

10 #8 MetaphorComparison not using like or as. Example: The snow blankets the earth.

11 Do you have all the definitions? Make sure your name is at the top of your paper. Make sure your paper is labeled with “Poetry Notes” at the top. Turn in your paper. I will check off and return it tomorrow so you can add it to your notebook.
