2 Study visits Main objectives Action 5 – Study visits to ENIC and MERIC centers Objectives get to know the methods applied for the recognition of joint degrees make the centers aware of general elements of the Erasmus Mundus Programme in relation to recognition issues collect information on cases of employability of Erasmus Mundus students in their national context involving EMA representatives analysis of possible examples of cases of Erasmus Mundus students applying for professional recognition on their national labor markets

3 Study visits The choice of the countries -Criteria for the choice results of questionnaires sent to ENIC and MERIC centers (Action 3) ENIC/MERIC countries with the highest number of students participating in EM programmes ENIC/MERIC countries where the highest number of higher education institutions involved in EM consortia -Final choice Canada (Malta) Israel, New Zealand (Italy) Russia (Estonia) Tunisia (Spain) USA (Portugal)

4 Study visits Methodology -Compilation of the guidelines for the study visits (November 2011) -Study visits consisted of two parts: 1.Introduction of the EM programme, the BRIDGE project and the objectives of the study visit 2.Interviews with Representatives of ENIC or MERIC centers Representatives of the ministries of higher education Higher education institutions’ representatives Erasmus Mundus alumni

5 Study visits Topics for discussion I -System of higher education and Bologna Process -National legislation on joint courses and joint degrees -Information on / examples of joint programmes delivered in the country (and joint degrees awarded) -Institutions in the country involved in the EM Programme -Examples of institutions’ contacts with ENIC/MERIC centers for questions arising from participation in EM projects (joint programmes (courses), joint degrees,…)

6 Study visits Topics for discussion II -The recognition of joint degrees in the country: actors, procedures (level of involvement of the ENIC/MERIC centers into the process) -Cases of students or institutions asking for academic recognition and/or professional recognition (cases treated by ENIC/MERIC centers) -EM students or institutions asking for academic recognition and/or professional recognition (cases treated by other authorities than ENIC/MERIC centers) -Possible cases of recognition of non-Erasmus Mundus joint degrees

7 Study visits Main results -Erasmus Mundus programme is not very well known outside Europe, at least Action 1 (joint master courses and joint doctorates) – neither among the universities nor the students -Nevertheless there are joint study programmes at the universities in frames of other educational programmes (e.g. Atlantis) or bilateral cooperation -No serious problems with recognition of Erasmus Mundus degrees or other double / multiple / joint degrees (possible reason: the excellence of Erasmus Mundus joint courses?!) -More information about the Erasmus Mundus programme and its possibilities needed
