13 Tompkins Civil War (1861-1865) The states argued with the US government about states’ right to secede from the country. Many Southern states, including Texas voted for succession. Then, the seceded states became known as the Confederate States of America and they fought against the United States- in the Civil War. The Confederacy was lead by President Jefferson Davis and General Robert E. Lee. Some Confederate soldiers volunteered while others were drafted. The Union was lead by President Abe Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant. Lincoln ordered a blockade of Galveston, Texas. General Lee and the Confederates surrendered to Grant to end the Civil War. Lincoln was killed and his Vice-President, Andrew Johnson, started Reconstruction in the United States.
